How it works

ULTIMATE SPORTATHON SCORING METHODOLOGY

The Ultimate Sportathon features 100 teams competing across six events: Go Karting, Mashie Golf, Putt Putt, Lawn Bowls, Ten Pin Bowling and an epic surprise event. The scoring system is designed to reward performance consistently and fairly in each event, with the overall winner determined by total points across all events. Bonus points will be available for completing additional tasks before and during the competition.

For each event, teams submit their scores using the official scoring sheet provided, which records the performance of their four members (e.g., total strokes for Putt Putt, total pinfall for Ten Pin Bowling, or points based on race results for Go Karting). Team scores are ranked from 1 to 100 based on their performance, with the top-performing team ranked 1st and the lowest ranked 100th.

1. Point Allocation: Points are awarded as follows:

  • 1st place: 150 points
  • 2nd place: 135 points
  • 3rd place: 125 points
  • 4th place: 115 points
  • 5th place: 110 points
  • 6th to 10th place: 105 to 85 points (decreasing by 5 points per rank)
  • 11th to 20th place: 80 to 55 points (decreasing by 3 points per rank)
  • 21st to 50th place: 50 to 21 points (decreasing by 1 point per rank)
  • 51st to 100th place: 20 points (flat rate)
  • BONUS Scoring: Point allocation will be announced at the time of the Bonus Boost.

To address vulnerabilities and minimize queries, the Ultimate Sportathon point allocation system ensures that:

  • Increases point gaps for top ranks to reward excellence.
  • Ensures meaningful points for lower ranks to maintain engagement.
  • Includes clear tie-breaking rules to avoid disputes.

2. Tie-Breaking Rules:

  • If teams have identical scores in an event, they receive the same rank and share the points for that rank (e.g., two teams tied for 1st both get 150 points).
  • For overall standings, ties are broken by:
    • Number of 1st-place finishes across events.
    • Number of 2nd-place finishes, then 3rd-place, etc.
    • Head-to-head comparison of event scores (sum of raw scores, e.g., total strokes or pinfall).

    3. Rationale:

    • Top-Heavy Rewards: Larger point gaps for top 5 (150, 135, 125, etc.) emphasize excellence, reducing queries about rewarding high performance.
    • Engagement for All: Flat 20 points for 51st–100th ensures lower-ranked teams stay motivated; “We’re still in it!”
    • Clear Ties: Explicit tie-breaking rules prevent disputes and align with fair play principles.
    • Balanced Spread: Graduated decreases (5, 3, 1, then flat) balance rewarding skill with inclusivity, minimizing perceived unfairness.

    4. Capturing Scores and Verification:

    • Scores are verified by the event marshall, team captain, and a competitor from another team, ensuring transparency per the Code of Conduct.
    • Verification is confirmed with signatures from all three parties ensuring accuracy.

    5. Event-Specific Notes:

    1. Go Karting: Rank teams by total combined lap times for each team.
    2. Putt Putt: Rank by lowest total strokes across teams.
    3. Mashie Golf: Rank by lowest total strokes across teams.
    4. Ten Pin Bowling: Rank by highest total pinfall across games.
    5. Lawn Bowls: Rank by points won, per event rules provided.
    6. Surprise Event: Teams will be informed one calendar month before the event.
    7. Verification: Official Event Scoring Sheet

Scoring will be available and on display at all times on the website after the last scoring round for each event is played. Scores will be captured and updated periodically.

This document is subject to updates where the organisers feel necessary. All changes will be shared via email to each team Captain.
